Bengaluru: The Karnataka Health Department has announced a major relief initiative for the public, especially for those above 40 years of age. This step has been taken to ensure easy access to eye care for economically weaker sections in both rural and urban areas. For the implementation of this large-scale program, the state government has officially partnered with the organization Restoring Vision.

The program will be rolled out through ‘Ayushman Arogya Mandir’ sub-centers across the state. In the first phase, Yadgir district in the Kalyana Karnataka region has been selected for pilot implementation, according to official sources.

Background: ‘Asha Kiran’ Scheme

Earlier, in October 2025, the state launched a major initiative called ‘Asha Kiran’ to address vision-related issues. Under this scheme, a comprehensive field assessment was conducted. A joint team of experts, including the World Health Organization and All India Institute of Medical Sciences, studied eye health issues in the state and provided key recommendations to the government.

Based on this report and recommendations, the government has now decided to distribute free reading glasses to individuals above 40 years of age.

Door-to-Door Screening

The implementation of this scheme will not be limited to hospitals or health centers. ASHA workers and health department staff will play a crucial role in outreach efforts. They will visit households directly to conduct preliminary eye screenings. Those identified with vision problems will be provided with appropriately measured spectacles.
